DETROIT (8/29/2023) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball alum Desmond Ferguson '00 earned a high honor from his hometown as he was inducted into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame in Mid-August.
Ferguson starred at Lansing Everett as a prep and was tabbed All-State as a senior after posting 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He was also team MVP, All-Conference and All-Area and helped his team to a district championship.Â
After playing his freshman year of college at Missouri, he came to Detroit Mercy and was part of a highly successful program in his last three years, helping the Titans win a Horizon League Championship and earn two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Detroit Mercy also brought back two wins in the big dance, defeating St. John's in 1998 and UCLA in 1999.Â
The two-time Horizon League All-Tournament selection tallied 1,113 points in 94 games in the red, white and blue, shooting 40.0% from the field and 39.8% from three, ninth in school history. His 235 career triples was first when he graduated, and currently ranks third in school history.Â
As a senior, he was second on the team, averaging 14.0 points and 5.1 rebounds, while leading the conference with 82 treys.
He went on to play overseas and in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers, appearing in seven games during the 2003-04 season. He made his NBA debut at Boston on March 31, 2004, and scored a career-high five points at home against the Hornets on April 3.Â
