Men's Basketball Welcomes Four More Transfers For 2023-24

DETROIT (9/6/2023) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team has announced the addition of four players for the upcoming season in Tyree Davis, Edoardo Del Cadia, Trenton Johnson and Abdullah Olajuwon.

"We added four players who bring a lot of different skill sets to our team," said head coach Mike Davis. "We have two walk-ons who are extremely hard workers and add some athleticism and shooting ability from these four players."

Tyree Davis * So. * G * 6-8 * 190 * Houston, Tex./Dawson (Kilgore College)
  • A junior college transfer from Kilgore College
  • Helped the Rangers to a 21-11 record and a semifinal appearance in the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament last season
  • Tallied 6.4 points and 4.6 rebounds, shooting 51.1% from the field 
  • Scored a season-high 16 points on 8-of-10 from the field at Lee College
  • As a prep, he was his district's top scorer and team MVP as a senior
  • His dad, Ricky Davis, played 12 years in the NBA and averaged 13.5 points per game, including a career-high 20.6 as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2002-03

Coach Davis on Davis - "Obviously, he comes from a good basketball family. He is a late bloomer who is very athletic and will be good for us defensively."

Edoardo Del Cadia * Gr. * F * 6-8 * 240 * Senigallia, Italy/Myerscough College (Nicholls State)
  • A graduate senior who has played at two Division I programs in Nicholls State and UNLV
  • After an injury ended his 2021-22 season with the Colonels, he came back to play in 25 games with four starts last year and tallied 3.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, while coming away with 28 steals
  • Had a season-high 11 points in back-to-back games at New Orleans and against Houston Christian and put in 10 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
  • Pulled down a career-high 10 boards at Southeastern Louisiana 
  • At UNLV in 2020-21, he played in 21 games and logged six starts, averaging 2.8 points and 3.0 rebounds
  • Reached double figures twice, including a career-high 13 points in the regular season finale against Wyoming and 10 points with five rebounds against Utah State in the second round of the Mountain West Tournament
  • Also had eight points on 4-of-4 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds against Colorado State
  • Started his collegiate career recording 14.0 points and 10.0 rebounds during his freshman campaign at Cloud County Community College and netted 13.2 points with 9.1 rebounds as a sophomore at the College of Central Florida
  • Attended Myerscough College in Preston, England, as a prep and helped his team win the EABL U18 and the U19 championship twice each and a DIII title 

Coach Davis on Del Cadia - "He is an older player who can be physical as well as someone who can shoot the basketball."

Trenton Johnson * Jr. * G * 6-2 * 180 * South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka (Vincennes)
  • Spent the last two years at Vincennes University and played in 64 games with 27 starts and posted 5.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game
  • Shot 33.2% from the field and 73.9% at the free-throw line
  • Last season, helped the Trailblazers to a 30-6 record and NJCAAA Region 24 Championship appearance as well as a win in the NJCAA National Tournament, an improvement from the team's 12-19 mark the year before
  • Registered 3.5 points as a sophomore, but scored a career-high 14 points against Harry S. Truman College, going 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-8 from three
  • Also had 13 points on the road at Lake Land College and 10 versus Olney Central College
  • As a prep, lettered for three years at Mishawaka and was All-Conference and team MVP as a senior after finishing with 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game

Coach Davis on Johnson - "He is a really hard worker who comes from a good junior college program and someone who is going to compete and come to play every single day."

Abdullah Olajuwon * RFr. * G * 6-5 * 210 * Houston, Tex./Fort Bend Clements (UMKC)
  • Was a member of the UMKC basketball team last season but did not appear in any games
  • Prepped at Clements High School and was All-District First Team as a senior
  • Tallied 25.0 points as a senior, hitting 48.0% from the field and 90.0% at the line
  • His dad, Hakeem Olajuwon, played 18 years in the NBA, winning two championships with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995 before being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2016

Coach Davis on Olajuwon - "Another player with a great family history in the game. He is a strong, physical guy who we believe can shoot the basketball and compete hard every day."
