Lodato's Two Goals Propels Detroit Mercy Past Cleveland State

CLEVELAND (10-13-24) Junior Abbey Lodato netted two goals off assists from graduate students Joyelle Washington and Hailey Matthews and freshman Sam Sickinger to lead Detroit Mercy to a  2-1 win at Cleveland State on Sunday Afternoon at Krenzler Field to remain undefeated in #HLMSOC play.

Just nine minutes into the game, Lodato got Detroit Mercy (7-6-2, 5-0-2 HL) on the board as she took a long feed from Matthews, weaved through two defenders, and fired a shot that deflected off the right leg of Cleveland State (1-13-1, 0-7 HL) goalkeeper Elyse Broderick into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

CSU responded with the equalizer moments later in the 13th minute, tying the game at 1-1.

The game remained 1-1 well into the second half until the 62nd minute. Washington took a throw-in, drove deep into the box down the left side, and sent a cross over to Sickinger who slotted a pass over to Lodato. Lodato caught a break as she fired a shot that deflected off a CSU defender into the back of the net for the game-winner.

UDM returns home for a #HLWSOC match against Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
