"It is never easy to play down a man for over 50 minutes but the boys displayed a super resilient effort to hang in and earn an important point on the road in Horizon League play," said Head Coach
Nate Kopunek. "We created enough chances to win the game and will look to improve before our next match which is a great opportunity against No. 13 Western Michigan at home Tuesday.
Detroit Mercy (2-8-3, 1-2-3 HL) wasted little time getting on the board just three minutes into the game as Copeland took the ball away from a Purdue Fort Wayne (6-4-2, 3-2-1 HL) player and slotted a pass up to Sylvain, who got behind the last defender for a breakaway. He then took one touch and beat PFW goalkeeper Nic Diana to the lower left 90 giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
The Titans came very close to taking a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute as Graduate student
Saeid Jannoun got behind a defender down the right side, took a through ball, and went around Diana who came off his line. Jannoun slotted a low shot to the left side that was heading into the net but another defender was able to stop the ball at the last minute before it crossed the line.
Shortly afterward, the Titans received a red card, forcing them to play a man down for the rest of the game but were able to maintain the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Mastodons were finally able to take advantage of playing a man up as they netted the equalizer in the 70th minute.
