DETROIT (12/10/2024) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball program lost one of its great players as Hall Of Famer George Fefles '55 passed away.
He was 93 years old.
Fefles earned three letters for the Titans from 1952-1955 and was a two-time team captain, the only two-time captain in Bob Calihan's 21 years as head coach.
He averaged 7.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 70 games, including a career-high 8.9 points and 4.1 rebounds as a junior in 1953-54. He tallied 6.6 points as a senior in leading U-D to a 15-11 record.
Raised in Chicago, he was All-State and All-City as a senior and was third in the city in scoring before coming to the Titans.
After U-D, he was a high school coach and later Athletic Director at Livonia Bentley for 22 years before moving back to Chicago and opening a building and maintenance company. He later served as president, secretary, and treasurer of the IABMC Building Maintenance Association.
He was inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall Of Fame in 2009.
