Titans Tumble At Davidson

Freshman Nate Johnson netted 10 points at Davidson.
Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. (12/14/2024) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell victim to a first-half scoring drought as the Titans went down on the road, 86-51, to Davidson on Saturday night.

Junior Legend Geeter led the way with 17 points, connecting on a career-best five triples, to go with three rebounds, two steals and a block. Redshirt freshman Grant Gondrezick II scored 13 points and freshman Nate Johnson added 10 points and four rebounds.

It was the first game played for the red, white and blue after announcing that two starters in senior Mak Manciel and junior Jared Lary will miss the rest of the season, while another starter in graduate senior Emmanuel Kuac is out indefinitely with an injury.

UDM (5-7) saw Geeter knock down a three and a driving layup by Johnson had the team up 5-3. A minute later, Johnson hit another shot as the Titans were ahead 7-5 with 17:24 left, but Davidson (8-2) went on a 29-0 run in the next 10 minutes to open a 34-7 lead and were in front 43-16 at the break.

Detroit Mercy never quit and went on a 22-7 charge in the second half to cut it to 64-43 with 8:16 left. UDM was 8-of-15 from the field during the run as Geeter connected on three triples and junior Orlando Lovejoy and Johnson had four points apiece.

That was as close as the short-handed Titans would get.

Freshmen Ryan Kalambay and Miles Mitchell each shared the team lead with a season-high six rebounds, while Lovejoy tallied four points, four assists, four steals, three rebounds and a block.

The Titans will stay on the road as they head back into Horizon League play, traveling to NKU on Wednesday.

Game Notes:
  • This was the first meeting between the two schools
  • Davidson was the third Atlantic 10 member that the Titans faced this season, following Loyola and Rhode Island, as Detroit Mercy is now 154-165 all-time against current members of the A-10
  • The Titans' 10 DI opponents are now 64-34 (.645) on the year
  • UDM has used eight different starting line-ups through 12 games
  • The seven free throws were a season-low with the 7-of-12 effort against Tulsa
  • Lovejoy now has 44 assists against just 24 turnovers, with 14 steals in his last nine games
  • Geeter has now scored in double figures in five straight games and six times on the year
  • Geeter has now hot 10 of his last 15, 3-pointers and is 12-of-21 on the year from three
  • Gondrezick II has now notched double figures in four straight games
