Emaia O'Brien scored a team-high 19 points to lead Detroit Mercy to a third consecutive road win with a 66-58 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon inside the UPMC Events Center. With the win, the Titans move to 3-0 in #HLWBB play for the second consecutive season with a 9-2 overall record to start the season for the first time in 43 years since the 1981-82 season.
O'Brien reached double figures for the 10th time this season, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range with three steals. Fifth-year guard Aaliyah McQueen added 13 points, grabbing a game-high eight rebounds, while sophomore Makayla Jackson chipped in 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting, matching a career-best four steals, helping UDM to their fourth straight meeting over the Colonials (5-8, 1-3 HL).
For the game, Detroit Mercy shot 20-of-48 from the field and a blistering 10-of-21 (47.6) from three-point range while going 16-of-22 from the charity stripe with 12 steals defensively.
The Titans started slowly, trailing 6-1 at the first media timeout in the opening quarter, but eventually found their footing and took a 14-12 lead at the end of the first.
UDM opened up an 11-point lead in the second quarter, but RMU didn't back down and the Titans went into the halftime break up 32-26.
The Colonials outscored Detroit Mercy in the third period 16-14, however, the Titans maintained a four-point lead at 46-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
Detroit Mercy opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to go ahead 54-42, forcing an RMU timeout. The Colonials again tried to claw their way back into the game, but the Titans stood tall and didn't allow RMU to get within five points for the remainder of the game. UDM led by as many as 13 points in the final period.
UDM returns to Calihan Hall for a New Year's Day showdown against IU Indy. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm. on ESPN+
