Murua Records Fifth Double-Double of the season as the Titans Come Up Short on Senior Day Against Wright State

Titans earn No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 seed Robert Morris on Tue., Mar. 5 at Calihan Hall

DETROIT (3-2-24) - Senior Irene Murua picked up where she left on Thursday night scoring in double figures for the second consecutive game with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6 from the free throw line while grabbing 13 rebounds to secure her fifth double-double of the season as Detroit Mercy battled but came up short with a 66-56 setback to Wright State on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. Before the game, the Titans honored Imani McNeal, Jada MooreheadCyd Rivera, and Lucia Fleta Robles for their hard work and dedication to the program.

Detroit Mercy (16-15, 9-11 HL) will enter the 2024 Barbasol #HLWBB Championships as the No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 seed Robert Morris on Tue., Mar. 5 at 7 pm. This marks the highest seed for the Titans since the 2016-17 season when they earned a #3 seed.

Junior Emma Trawally Porta added 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, 2-of-3 from the 3-point line, and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe while grabbing seven boards with three blocks. Graduate student Imani McNeal was the third Titan in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds while sophomore Myonna Hooper added seven points with six rebounds.

Turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as UDM had 24 which led to 23 Wright State (17-14, 11-9 HL) points. Conversely, the Titans only had six points off 15 WSU turnovers.

McNeal came out the gate scoring five of the Titans' first nine points. However,  the Raiders closed out the quarter on a 10-4 run to lead 19-9 holding UDM to single digits to end the first.

Detroit Mercy returned the favor, turning up the defense in the second quarter and holding WSU to only nine points to pull within three points, 28-25, heading into the locker room.

The third quarter started nip and tuck for both teams before the Titans clawed their way to trailing by a point at 35-34 off a jumper from McNeal at the 4:31 mark. The Raiders responded by outscoring UDM 11-4 to close out the frame with a seven-point lead, 46-39.

Freshman Makayla Jackson hit a jumper followed by a 3-pointer from Trawally Porta to open the fourth quarter. Murua added a layup to pull the UDM within six points, 52-46, with 6:29 to go. From there, the Titans couldn't get over the hump as WSU hit a 3-ball to go up 10 points and went on to outscore UDM 14-7 to take a commanding 14- point at 60-46 at the 3:24 mark. Detroit Mercy cut the lead down to eight points with 34 seconds left but it was too little too late as the Raider closed out the game at the charity stripe to earn the No. 4 seed in the #HLWBB Championships.
