Head coach Guy Murray '89 was honored by UDM's College of Engineering 
DETROIT (4/29/2024) -- Longtime Titan and Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray '89 was honored by his alma mater at the annual College of Engineering Slide Rule Dinner in April.

In 2013, the College started a new tradition in the annual Slide Rule Dinner with the presentation of the College of Engineering & Science All Star Awards as coach Murray earned the accolade for Computer Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1989. This award is bestowed on distinguished alums from different disciplines who have, in a variety of ways, contributed to the betterment of their field, the College of Engineering & Science, and/or its students. 

Coach Murray is in his 31st season with the University. He started as an assistant coach and was promoted to head coach for men's and women's track and field and women's cross country in 1993 and took over the men's cross country program in 1995. In his tenure, he has led teams to 11 conference championships. 

In addition to his team's successes, Murray has been named league Coach of the Year for women's outdoor track twice (1999, 2000), men's outdoor once (2003) and seven times for his indoor success (women's in 1994, '96'98'99 and 2002 and men's in '96 and 2000).

He has coached over 45 student-athletes who have been NCAA Provisional Qualifiers, NCAA Regional Qualifiers or NCAA Championships Preliminary participates in track and field and regional and NCAA runners in cross country. 

Coach Murray was a four-year letter winner on the Titan cross country and track teams from 1985-89. As a Titan, he won the Dominick Taddonio Cross Country MVP award in 1988 and the President's Award, the athletic department's highest honor, for the top senior student-athlete in 1989. He was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Cross Country Team in 1986 and the All-MCC Track and Field Team in 1989.

He was an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the marathon in 1999 after he finished 19th at the Grandma's Marathon with a personal best time of 2:21:18. At the Olympic Trials in 2000, Murray placed 57th, with a mark of 2:35:16.
