GREEN BAY, Wisc. (9-14-24) - Graduate student
Saeid Jannoun posted his first goal of the season off the first career assist from senior
Clayton Lafayette as Detroit Mercy dropped its #HLMSOC season opener, 5-1, at Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
"We have more to give and the scoreline makes this look worse than it was," said Head Coach
Nate Kopunek. "We had plenty of chances to get back in the game but unfortunately came up short again. We can and will need to be more clinical in the final third. As we clean up those final crucial pieces of our game, we are still very confident in this group to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves."
Green Bay (5-2, 1-0 HL) took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. After posting their second goal in the 27th minute, the Phoenix added back-to-back tallies in the 38th and 39th minute to take a commanding 4-0 lead.
With just five seconds left in the half, Jannoun headed a loose ball in off a deflection from Lafayette to get Detroit Mercy (2-4, 0-1 HL) on the board at 4-1.
The Titans had a golden opportunity to cut the deficit in half with consecutive shots from point-blank range in the 81st minute but couldn't get the ball past GB goalkeeper Alvaro Rodriguez. The Phoenix then added another goal just three minutes to pick up their first #HLMSOC win.
