Mateo Phillips each recorded a shot on goal as Detroit Mercy suffered a 2-0 setback at Michigan on Friday night at the U-M Soccer Stadium. Freshman
Colin Monroe made his first career start in goal.
Overall, Detroit Mercy (1-4) delivered a solid effort outshooting Michigan (4-0-1) 13-7 with four shots on goal and held a distinctive 10-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities but were unable to convert.
"The game of football is tough sometimes as we had some great moments in this game and felt like we were in it for the full 90 minutes," said Head Coach
Nate Kopunek. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't find the back of the net. We are excited to take this mentality from this game and shift our full focus to Horizon League play."
Both teams played even for the majority of the first half before Michigan broke through with a goal in the 38th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 56th minute, U-M connected on a long ball out of their defensive end for a breakaway goal to move ahead 2-0.
The Titans had a good chance to get on the board 10 minutes after as sophomore
Drew Pierson got the ball in space just outside the box on the right side and ripped a shot that just missed to the far left post in the 66th minute.
In the 81st minute, Sylvain got the ball in space just inside the box and fired a shot to the low left side but U-M goalkeeper Hayden Evans stood tall making the save to keep the Titans off the board.
