IU Indy Races By Shorthanded Titans

INDIANAPOLIS (1/9/2025) -- Down three starters, the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team put up a fight early, but IU Indy went on a run and never looked back as the Titans fell, 95-61, on the road on Thursday night.

Detroit Mercy (6-12, 2-5 HL) - already without the services of senior Mak Manciel and junior Jared Lary - was without leading scorer Orlando Lovejoy, who is day-to-day with an ankle injury.

Redshirt freshman Grant Gondrezick II led the way with 21 points and five assists, his third 20-point game of the season. Freshman Nate Johnson had nine points, while freshman Miles Mitchell posted five points and a season-high nine rebounds.

IU Indy (6-12, 2-5 HL) led just 15-14 at the 11:43 mark, but the Jaguars went on a 15-2 run and the Titans could not recover. The Titans got to within seven with a little over four minutes remaining in the opening period, however IU Indy closed the half on a 13-4 run and took a 45-29 lead into the halftime break. Detroit Mercy was 11-of-26 from the field in the first half.

Any hopes of a comeback by the Titans were quickly erased by the Jaguars. UDM struggled shooting in the second half, going just 9-of-22 from the field and 2-of-8 from three-point range.

Freshman TJ Nadeau had eight points. Freshman Chase Kuiper scored his first career points in a Titan uniform, going 4-of-4 at the charity stripe, and freshman Ryan Kalambay pulled down a season-tying six boards.

As a team, Detroit Mercy was 20-of-48 from the field (41.7%), 5-of-17 from three-point land, and 16-of-22 (72.7%) from the free throw line.

The Titans continue their #HLMBB road trip with a game at Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM.

Game Notes:
  • The Titans still lead the all-time series, 8-4, but are now 3-4 on the road
  • Every Titan player that played scored for the second-straight game
  • Gondrezick II was back in double figures for the first time in three games and the seventh time this season
  • Gondrezick II's other 20-point games were 22 at Eastern Michigan and 20 at Wisconsin
