ANN ARBOR, Mich. (10-28-25) - Sophomore
Mano Karjian posted two quality shots on goal, while sophomore
Johnny Strickler and redshirt junior
Clayton Lafayette each had one as Detroit Mercy put forth a valiant effort in a 4-0 setback at No. 12 Michigan on Tuesday night at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Detroit Mercy (5-9-2) came out firing from the jump, posting four shots with two on goal from Karjian and one from Lafayette over the first 12 minutes of the match.
Karjian fired a shot to the right post, where U-M (10-2-3) goalkeeper Isaiah Goldsmith made a diving save in the 17th minute. After the ensuing corner kick, the Wolverines mounted a counterattack and capitalized off a turnover with a goal to take a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
In the 23rd minute, senior
John Nino was assessed a yellow card, which was elevated to a red card after video review, for obstructing a goal-scoring opportunity, forcing the Titans to play with 10 men the rest of the way.
In the 39th minute, junior
Zander Crooks stole a bad pass at the top of the box and ripped a shot that just missed the left post off frame, keeping the deficit 1-0 going into halftime.
UDM had a great chance for the equalizer just five minutes into the second half as Strickler had a loose ball from a cross fall to him deep inside the box. He fired a shot, but it was turned aside by Goldsmith with a diving save at point-blank range in the 49th minute.
After a video review, Detroit Mercy was called for a handball inside the box in the 59th minute. U-M cashed in the ensuing penalty kick to take a 2-0 lead.
The Wolverines then added back-to-back goals in the 64th and 65th minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead to secure the win.
