Titans Come Up Short in Metro Series Battle at Oakland

UDM placed three players in double figures led by McQueen's 19 points, followed by 14 points from O'Brien and 10 from Edwards

ROCHESTER, Mich. (2-1-25) - Detroit Mercy had three players in double figures, led by fifth-year senior Aaliyah McQueen scoring a team-high 19 points with seven rebounds, followed by graduate student Emaia O'Brien with 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting from long range as Detroit Mercy battled but couldn't get over the hump falling 77-63 to arch-rival Oakland in Metro Series action on Saturday afternoon at the OU Credit Union O'rena.

Graduate student Jasmine Edwards posted a Titan career-high 10 points with six boards and four steals while sophomore Makayla Jackson added nine points with six boards.

Offensively, Detroit Mercy (12-9, 6-7 HL) had trouble breaking Oakland's (8-13, 6-6 HL) press committing, 27 turnovers, which led to 39 Golden Grizzly points that proved to be the difference in the game. Conversely on the defensive end, they had trouble slowing down OU's Maddie Skorupski who posted a #HLWBB season-high 39 points.

After the game was tied at 8-8 to start, Oakland went on a 12-0 run to move ahead 20-8 before a layup by Jackson ended the spurt with the Titans trailing 25-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Titans flipped the script, opening the second quarter with a 15-5 run to pull within three points at 30-27. Overall, the Titans outscored OU 20-11 in the second quarter to battle back within four points, 36-32, at the break.

OU returned the favor, starting the third quarter on a 14-3 run of their own to move back ahead by 15 points, 50-35, at the 4:03 mark. The Titans clawed away, adding seven points to trail by 16 going into the fourth at 70-56.

The Titans opened the fourth quarter scoring 10 points, cutting the deficit to 10 points, 62-52, off a McQueen layup to remain within striking distance with 5:15 to go. Despite UDM outscoring Oakland 21-19 overall in the frame, the Titans couldn't inch any closer down the stretch en route to their fourth consecutive loss.

Detroit Mercy concludes their four-game road swing at Cleveland State on Thur, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
