Titans Upended On Senior Day

DETROIT (2/21/2025) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team made a furious run at a comeback but couldn't get it done as the Titans fell, 73-65, on Friday night in Calihan Hall.

It was Senior Day as the Titans honored Mak Manciel prior to tip-off.

Junior Orlando Lovejoy led the way with 17 points and grabbed six rebounds with three assists, while freshman Nate Johnson scored 16 points and had four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Detroit Mercy (8-21, 4-14 HL) found itself down by as many as 13 twice in the second half after a Cleveland State (19-9, 13-4 HL) run, but the Titans would cut it to three with just under four minutes left.

In the first half, CSU had a lead for most of the period and led by as many as nine, but the Titans kept fighting, and a three by Johnson had the team down by just four, 29-25, at the 2:32 mark.

Cleveland State went into the break up 33-25 and then extended the margin to 11, 38-27, just two minutes in. The Vikings then had a 13-point advantage, 46-33, with 14:57 left, but Lovejoy had back-to-back baskets, and junior Legend Geeter nailed a three for seven straight points.

The Vikings answered with seven in a row to regain a 13-point cushion, but the Titans wouldn't go away as Manciel hit a three and Lovejoy connected on a jumper to start a 12-2 charge. After a CSU bucket, graduate senior Emmanuel Kuac had two straight baskets and two free throws by Lovejoy trimmed it to 55-50 with 4:30 on the clock.

Detroit Mercy forced a miss on the next possession, and Lovejoy was able to get inside for a layup for a 55-52 game with just over four minutes remaining, but the Vikings went on another 7-0 spurt.

With about a minute left, freshman TJ Nadeau had a layup and then forced a turnover, resulting in two free throws that the rookie made. Another turnover led to a layup from Kuac, and it was 67-63. The Titans were also within four at 69-65 after two more free throws from Nadeau with 46 seconds to go, but that was as close as the red, white and blue would get.

Nadeau ended with six points and six rebounds. Kuac had nine points and five boards and freshman Ryan Kalambay tallied six points, five rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist.

UDM shot 42.3% from the field (22-of-52), was 16-of-22 (72.7%) at the free throw line and outrebounded the Vikings 37-33.

Detroit Mercy will now hit the road for a pair of games to end the regular season, starting with a trip to Green Bay on Thursday.
