DETROIT (8-24-25) - Junior
Drew Pierson scored his first-career game-winning goal with a 52-yard free kick strike in the first half, while sophomore
Colin Monroe picked up his first career win and second consecutive shutout between the pipes as Detroit Mercy blanked Mercyhurst 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate student
Ryan Sommerfeld scored his first goal in a Titan uniform, assisted by redshirt junior
Clayton Lafayette and sophomore
Mano Karjian, late in the second half.
In the 33rd minute, Pierson lined up for a free kick 52 yards from the goal and delivered a strike that floated up into the wind and into the upper right 90 past Mercyhurst (0-1-1) goalie Gonzalo Onrubia, giving Detroit Mercy (1-0-1) a 1-0 lead.
In the 86th minute, the Titans got an insurance tally off a counterattack. Lafayette got the ball at midfield and passed it to Karjian, who took the ball down the right side. He then passed it back to Lafayette just outside the box, who crossed it over to a wide-open Sommerfeld in front of the net, who connected on a volley to seal the game.
Detroit Mercy opens a three-game swing at Butler on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m.
