Titans Sting Hornets In Final Day Of CMU's Motor City Match-Up

Senior Ethan Oblak got the Titans going with a big win in his match.
BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (10/13/2026) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's golf teams dominated to close Central Michigan's Motor City Match-Up on Tuesday.

The combined team event saw the Titans beat the Alabama State Hornets, 9.5-2.5, at the Birmingham Country Club in Birmingham, Michigan.

The men did not drop a single match, winning five and splitting the other, while the women took four of their six bouts.

Senior Ethan Oblak had the big win for the men, taking the first three holes and building a six-hole lead on the back nine to win 5 & 4.

Junior Harshan Juttu took an early lead in his match and then put it away, winning four of the last six holes en route to a 4 & 2 outcome.

Senior Mason Sokolowski and sophomore Peyton Lawley won their affairs, 3 & 2. Sokolowski never trailed as he won his first two holes, while Lawley also never fell behind, taking three of the first four holes and going up by as many as four in his match.

Senior David Swab jumped out to a three-stroke lead seven holes in, but his counterpart knotted it up with two holes left. Swab would recover to win the final two for a 2-and-1 victory.

Freshman Christian Helzer trailed for much of his match and was down by three with six holes left, but he battled back, winning the fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth holes to take a one-hole lead before settling for a draw and earning a half a point.

The women saw senior Gabriella Tapp, juniors Chloe Fong and Morgan Jones, and sophomore Sadie Kondel all win as well.

Tapp had a big triumph, winning 6 & 5. She lost her first hole but was up by two on the back nine. She then won the first four holes on the front to seal the match.

Fong also dropped her first hole but led by one through four. The next five holes were halved before she won three in a row and tallied a 4 & 3 outcome.

Jones would start the day falling on her first hole, but got it into gear, winning the next two and going up by three on the back nine. She would cruise on the front to a 3 & 2 ledger.

Kondel had a comeback win in Monday's match against Green Bay, but this time she got an early lead and stayed up by three through 10 holes. Her ASU opponent tied it with three holes left, but she then claimed six and seven and halved eight for a 2 & 1 win.

The men will be back in action next week as they compete in the Xavier Invitational, while the women's fall schedule is now complete.
