Detroit Mercy's (5-18, 3-11 HL) defense at the end of the game proved to be the difference. The Titans increased their lead to 11 points at 59-48 in the opening moments of the fourth quarter. Out of the first media timeout, Oakland (8-16, 5-9 HL) outscored UDM 13-6, tying the game at 65-65 with 3:20 left. Davis made a free throw, followed by a layup from Hooper, moving UDM ahead 68-65 before a pair of OU free throws sliced the lead back down to one point.
On the ensuing possession, McQueen missed a shot, but Edwards grabbed the offensive board and hit the put-back, giving the Titans a three-point lead, 70-67, with 1:59 to go. Hooper then came up big with a block that went off an OU player after an official review. After Davis missed a 3-pointer, the Golden Grizzlies once again pulled within a point with a layup. On the next trip down the court, Davis was not going to be denied, as she drove hard to the rack and hit a reverse layup, moving UDM ahead 72-69 with 44 seconds left. Hooper then drew an offensive foul, giving the ball back to the Titans. She missed a layup, which didn't hit the rim, resulting in a shot clock violation after another official review. After a pair of time-outs, UDM's defense stood tall and didn't let Oakland get a shot off the first attempt. With three seconds left, off the second inbound pass, Lianna Baxter's game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer didn't connect, preserving the Titans' win.
The Titans opened the third quarter shooting 5-for-9 with two 3-balls from Davis and Hooper to take a 3-point lead, 42-29, at the media timeout.
