Rob Ward

Robert Ward returns to the University of Detroit Mercy for his fourth year as the hitting and outfield coach, bringing 28 years of coaching experience to the Detroit Mercy coaching staff with a history of helping high school and college student-athletes achieve their dreams of playing softball at the collegiate level.

Before coming to the University of Detroit Mercy, Ward played a key role on the Anchor Bay High School softball coaching staff from 2017-18, serving as a Varsity Assistant Coach since 2020, where his responsibilities included overseeing hitting, infield mechanics, base running, and player development.

Ward has helped guide the Tars to a 132-50 overall record, two Metro Area Conference (MAC) Red co-championships, three district titles, and three regional appearances.

Ward also served as an Assistant Coach with the Michigan Batbusters, helping the 16U squad to a 28-1-3 record during the 2023 season.

Additionally, Ward spent time as an Advanced Hitting and Fielding Instructor at Vitale’s Perfect Game and Total Sports. Ward was also a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) official for 15 years and USA Hockey for 17 years.

Off the field, Ward currently serves as an internationally appointed UAW trainer and facilitator for Stellantis, representing the Local 212 membership.

Coach Ward is passionate about developing student-athletes who excel far beyond the softball field and is committed to fostering success in the classroom, in life, and in competition.

Coach Ward believes that strong relationships built on trust, accountability, and genuine care create the foundation for growth. Through a positive and nurturing coaching style, paired with a relentless competitive drive, he challenges players to reach their full potential while preparing them to become confident leaders, supportive teammates, and successful individuals long after their playing careers have ended.
