Marni Achterhoff

After a distinguished playing career at the University of Detroit Mercy, Marni Achterhoff just ended her second year as an assistant coach with her alma mater. As an alum of the school and four-year letterwinner on the golf team, Achterhoff has been part of both Horizon League Championships and NCAA Regional appearances.

Achterhoff graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in secondary education and wrapped up her undergraduate studies by student teaching last fall.

She was part of the team’s first-ever Horizon League championship in 2010 as she helped league the squad to victory by taking second with a 229, which included a career-best 72 on the opening 18. That HL title also propelled the Titans to their first NCAA Regional appearance.

She then aided head coach Terri Anthony-Ryan in 2012-13, helping the team to a school record nine tournament wins on the year and its second HL title and NCAA Central Regional appearance. The 2013 Titans also had three players secure All-League honors and four claim All-Tournament accolades after finishing in the top seven at the Horizon League Championship.

Achterhoff took part in 80 rounds of golf for the Titans in her career, posting 15 top-20 finishes and six top-10 efforts. She finished in the top 20 at the league championship all four years and took home All-HL Tournament honors as a junior.

She earned the Dad Butler Award at the 2011 Titan Academic & Athletic Honors Luncheon, given for determination in recovering from an athletic injury, and was a four-time member of the Detroit Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. She was also a member of the Horizon League’s Fall and Spring Academic Honor Roll and was selected to the National Golf Coaches Association’s Women’s All-American Scholar Team as a junior and senior.

Achterhoff also served on SAAC for three years and was the committees’ Vice President as a senior.

A native of Muskegon, Achterhoff attended Mona Shores High School, where she was a four-year varsity letterwinner in golf. She earned Honorable Mention All-Michigan after her senior year and garnered All-O-K Green Conference honors all four years. She was first team All-Michigan in 2006, while leading her team to a Muskegon City Championship. As a junior amateur in 2006, she won the Lake Michigan Junior Golf Tour Championship and ended ninth in the final PowerBilt Golf Junior Tour Player of the Year point standings.

She graduated in 2011 with a degree in Education and finished up her teaching requirements last fall serving as a student teacher at nearby Livonia Stevenson.
