Led by sophomore Patrick Liederbach's (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) seventh-place finish, the UDM men's cross country team gave a rousing effort on the course today, ending the 2008 Michigan Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships in fifth place. Detroit totaled 157 points in the 8k event, held at Kensington Metropark in Milford.

"I am very pleased with our finish," said head coach Guy Murray. "We moved up the standings and held our own on a tough day."

Liederbach got off to a great start and challenged for the lead throughout the race. His time of 25:59 was just four seconds off of a top five finish and just 19 seconds behind 2008 champion Abdullah Saleh of Wayne State.

"Pat was in contention the whole way," Murray said. "A great run for him and today will surely help him in future races."

Freshman Alex Vanias (Leroy, MI/Pine River) was the second Titan to cross the finish line, finishing in 24th place with a time of 26:45. Graduate senior Andrew Hayner (Royal Oak, MI/U-D Jesuit) took 31st in 26:51, while Senior Jon Hans (Dearborn Heights, MI/Crestwood) claimed 41st in 27:12.

Grand Valley won the overall race, while Saleh captured his second Michigan Intercollegiate title in three years.

The Titans will have one more race before the Horizon League Championship, as Detroit travels to Bowling Green, Ohio, next Saturday, Oct. 18, to compete in the Falcon Invitational.
