Women's Soccer Shut Out By Milwaukee, 3-0

Box Score

The Detroit Titans women's soccer team suffered its first Horizon League road setback of the season falling 3-0 to #18 Milwaukee Friday night at Engelmann Field.

Detroit (8-7-1, 4-3-1 HL) was under constant pressure from nationally ranked Milwaukee (14-2-2, 6-1 HL) for much of the match as the Panthers outshot the Titans 24-2 with senior goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry (Flushing, MI/Flushing) making 11 saves.

"You have to tip your hat to Milwaukee, who has a very athletic and deep team, which is why they are ranked 18th in the country," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "They are hands down the best team we have played in the conference and this could be one of their better teams I've seen in the last 13 years. I am proud of how our girls battled to the end and I look for us to rebound against Green Bay on Sunday."

The Panthers were led by Sarah Talbert, who recorded two goals, and Sarah Hagen, who added another with an assist.

Milwaukee got on the board first in the 15th minute as Hagen sent a lead pass into the 18-yard box, which Fortenberry came out to cut off. However, Talbert beat her to the ball and lifted a shot over her hands into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Talbert would strike again giving Milwaukee a 2-0 lead as she was able to put in a loose ball that was right in front of the goal.

Detroit had a good chance to cut into the lead later in the first half as junior Emily Kiely (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) broke in alone on a long pass into the 18-yard line box, but Milwaukee goalkeeper Erin Kane came out and made a diving play to scoop up the ball a split second before Kiely could get off a shot.

In the second half, Milwaukee kept applying pressure and eventually took a 3-0 lead on Hegan's league-leading 18th goal of the season at the 69:19 mark.

Detroit concludes the regular season with a Horizon League match at Green Bay on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
