Women's Soccer Falls To Butler In Horizon League Tournament

The fifth-seeded Detroit Titans saw their season end with a 6-1 loss to the No. 4 seed, Butler, in the quarter-final round of the 2008 Horizon League women's soccer tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bowl.

Archana Wadhawan scored in the 78th minute for the Titans off feeds from Lauren Moss and Selena Stanski. Stanski sent in a pass down the right side to Moss, who crossed the ball to Wadhawan. The UDM sophomore made a sliding kick to put the ball past BU goalie Laura Baker. By that time, however, Detroit still found itself trailing 4-1, as Molly Kruger and Lindsey Fox had each tallied twice for the host Bulldogs before UDM got on the board.

"This is not the way we wanted to end the season but I am very pleased with our overall body of work," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "We were only a point away from a third-place finish during the regular season and I am proud how our team battled as much as they could and fought through injuries for the entire year.

"I really want to thank all of the seniors," added Lupenec. "Melanie Slusher, Katie Fortenberry, Nicole Gipson, Trina Kochanski, Lauren Moss and Shelley Marick gave it everything they had. They were here when the times were good, are the reason this program was successful in the past and they will be the reason the program will continue to be successful in the future. They showed great leadership qualities and were outstanding role models on and off the field for freshman this year."

UDM had trouble getting any scoring opportunities against a stingy Butler defense throughout the day. Consequently, the Bulldogs' offense outshot the Titans 23-5 and recorded a season-high six goals. Detroit ends the season with an 8-9-1 record, while Butler advances to the HL semi-finals at 11-10-0.
