The UDM men's basketball team used some insufferable defense to end a three-game losing streak as the Titans downed Aquinas, 58-48, on Spencer Haywood night in Calihan Hall. The Titans honored the former U-D star during the game and the former NBA standout and Olympian also served as a guest coach.

With the win, Detroit improves to 3-6 on the season, including a perfect 3-0 at home. The victory also marked the first time this season UDM held an opponent under 50 points. The last time the Titans accomplished this feat was on Feb. 21, 2007, when Detroit defeated Cleveland State 60-48.

A trio of juniors led the way for UDM (3-6) as Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) netted a time-high 17 points. Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) added 14 points with six rebounds and a game-high seven assists, while Michael Harrington (Country Club Hills, IL/Rich Central) pulled down a career-best 12 boards.

Midway through the second half, UDM led by just five, 35-30, with 10:14 to go in the game when the Titans went on a 10-3 spurt to open up a double-digit lead, 45-33, with 6:15 left in the contest. Five different Titans scored during the charge, while the Detroit defense held Aquinas (4-7) to just one field goal in five attempts. Aquinas managed to get within six with 2:19 remaining in regulation, but the Titans held off the late run en route to the 10-point victory.

Pedja Lazic scored a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds for Aquinas, while Damacious White added 10 markers and five caroms.

The Saints were able to jump out to an early 9-4 lead and led 15-12 midway through the first, when the Titans stormed back with eight straight points go out in front, 20-15 with 6:16 to go in the first half.

Payne started the run with a free throw and that was followed by a 3-pointer from senior Tryl Hartfield (Wyoming, MI/Rogers). The next time down the court, senior Chris Hayes (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) nailed a bucket and a Payne steal and dunk ensued giving the Titans a lead they would never relinquish.

Detroit saw the Saints get within one, 20-19, but the red, white and blue went into the locker room with a 26-23 advantage.

After a brief home game, the Titans hit the road for two games before the New Year, starting with a contest at Illinois on Saturday, Dec. 20. The Big Ten Network will carry the game, which is slated for an 8:00 p.m. start.
