Led by graduate senior Andrew Hayner, the Detroit Titans men's cross country team took seventh at the running of the 22nd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, held at Cass-Benton Park in Northville.

"I am happy with the team finish as we only ran 8 of our 17 man roster and we held our own against a very strong field," said head coach Guy Murray."

Hayner was the only Titan to finish in the top 20 taking 13th in the four-mile race in 20:46. Freshman Alex Vanias, last week's top finisher at the Golden Grizzly Open, placed 26th with a time of 21:11.

"Andrew is making the most of his fifth year and all those miles he put in the previous four years are really paying off now," said Murray. "Just another great run for Alex as he is running as well as we hoped."

Sophomores Ryan Ayala and Kevin Smalley were neck and neck throughout the race, but Ayala crossed the line first finishing 59th in 22:00, while Smalley took 60th just six seconds behind him at 22:06.

Rounding out the Titans' runners were junior Kevin Wozniak (82nd - 22:54), redshirt freshman Nate Jenkins (85th - 22:59), junior Alex Gould (92nd - 23:19) and sophomore Brian Greenhoe (100th - 23:46).

Bucknell, coached by former UDM head coach and event founder Kevin Donner, took first with 56 points. The Bison had the most harriers in the top 20 with four, including fourth-place finisher Andrew Huebner.

Eastern Michigan was second with a team score of 66. The Eagles had two runners among the top eight with Luke Chrusciel (fourth) and Curtis Vollmar (eighth). Oakland's Zach Jones won the overall race with a 19:59, just the third run ever under 20 minutes in the history of the meet. That finish helped the Golden Grizzlies place third just behind EMU with a score of 67.

The Titans return to action in two weeks as Detroit heads to South Bend, IN, for the annual National Catholics Championship. The race will take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Notre Dame Golf Course.
