Turnovers Loom Large As UDM Falls To Cleveland State

Box Score

Plagued by turnovers and missed opportunities, the UDM men's basketball team dropped a 66-49 decision to Cleveland State on Thursday night at the Wolstein Center. With the setback, the Titans fell to 5-15 and 0-10 in the Horizon League, while CSU improved to 14-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

The Titans started the game with six turnovers in the first eight minutes of play as Cleveland State took an early seven-point lead, 13-6.

Detroit got right back in the game outscoring CSU 14-5 over the next four minutes to take a 20-18 advantage, thanks to junior Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) and some good free throw shooting. UDM was six-for-six from the charity during the run, while Kennedy paced UDM scoring 10 of the team's first 20 points.

Both teams then traded baskets with Detroit ahead by one, 22-21, at the 7:11 mark, but the Vikings ended the half on a 13-4 spurt to take a 34-26 halftime lead.

It stayed an eight point game until the 17:31 mark in the second half when CSU, up 41-33 at that point, broke the game wide open with a 12-4 spurt to give the Vikings a double digit lead, 53-37, with 13 minutes to go, a lead that they would never let get below 10 points the rest of the way.

Kennedy led the Titans with 14 points and seven rebounds, while senior Chris Hayes (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) tied his season high with 10 markers.

UDM went 14-of-16 from the free throw line, but turned the ball over 20 times

The Titans return to the court on Saturday when Detroit faces Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m.
