WBB Q&A: Freshman Demeisha Fambro

Detroit freshman guard Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) is featured in this week's women's basketball Q&A.

Why did you choose Detroit?
I came to Detroit because for one, this is my hometown. I have family, friends and supportive people that will be able to come and see my games and just be in my corner. I feel more comfortable knowing that I can go home to get a home cooked meal. Another reason is because Coach Rad(emacher), while I was playing AAU, she was more consistent with coming to my games. She scouted me very well and I thought she was the best scout. She was just on it. She studied that I play with my jersey in my mouth and she told me everything about me, so I was just really impressed.

What was your official visit like?

My official visit was a blast. We did so many things. We went to Fishbones, Buffalo Wild Wings and we also went roller skating. It was so fun to watch the coaches skate. Everyone went except for Coach Geary. When I first got here, we went to Pizza Papalis and then in the morning they brought me McDonald's for breakfast. It was a very fun experience.

What other schools recruited you?
I had to choose between Illinois, Memphis, Detroit and Temple, which came in the last minute, so I said forget Temple because they needed tape. It was getting down to the last days and needed to make a decision because it was almost signing day. I had people tell me that I could be a late signee, but I didn't want to do that because I wanted to go into my senior season knowing that I had somewhere to go. I really wanted to go to Illinois because for one, I love downtown Chicago because I love to shop there. My AAU coach told me to wait and see what else I had and then Detroit came and I Illinois ended up giving my scholarship to someone else because I took too long, so my choice was between Memphis and Detroit.

Everything happens for a reason. I feel like what God has for me is for me and I know He would not short change me and in the long run it will pay off. This is my destiny, so I'm going to make it work with what I have.

How old were you when you started playing basketball?
Ever since I could say the word ball, I've been playing ball. But I didn't get on a team until I was nine, which is when I started playing PAL, that became a PAL/AAU team because we traveled. I didn't play middle school basketball at all and then before I got to high school, I played for the Michigan Lakers. I then played all four years at Crockett and then I played with Team Detroit, which is when Coach Rad(emacher) started scouting me, when I was with Team Detroit.

Did you just love the game when you started playing basketball?
I think it was just God giving it to me, I don't know, it just came natural.

Did you have a basket at home?
Yes, first I started off with a Fisher Price basket when I was six or seven years old. At my grandma's house, she has this long hallway and would always throw the ball above a doorway, like it was a hoop. I would just be paying at night and get in trouble for bouncing the ball in the hallway, it was one of those little bouncy balls.

Is there any significance to #12?
I have had #12 since I played with my first team. I used to like the #7 for some reason, but I think I liked it because my uncle used to like it so much. He played basketball and was good and I admired him for that and so when I was going to play my first game and when we were getting the jerseys, I wanted #7. One of the assistant coaches on the PAL team told me that I couldn't have #7 because he gave it to someone else and gave me #12. But, I played so well that game. I had maybe four threes that game; I played so well. My mother said just keep #12 because you played well so #12 must be made for you.

What are you most looking forward to playing here at Detroit?
I'm looking to win the Horizon League Championship. I'm looking to put UDM on the map and be on ESPN and just blow up. All those coaches that were recruiting me, I want them to be so jealous, saying 'yeah, we had her. We tried to recruit her and we turned her down' and now I'm on top.

What are your thoughts going to be during your first game here at Calihan Hall?
Because MSU is ranked #10, that's going to make me so nervous. They are going to bring all their fans and there is going to be so many people. I'm just going to pray and just ask God to steer me through the game and let him play for me and let me make the right decisions. You don't know what's going to happen. I'm just praying that we win.

Do you have any pregame superstitions?
Yes. For one, I stay to myself. I meditate. I just think about what I'm going to do and how I'm going to help the team. I listen to gospel for motivation on my ipod and when it gets to closer to the game, I'll listen to more pumped up music to get me hyped. I pray the whole time, I make sure I get enough rest, get enough sleep and eat well.

Is there any opponent that you're looking forward to facing the most this year?
Basically the big schools like Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State and Cincinnati. I want to play Green Bay and I have heard so much about Green Bay, how they have won the Horizon League Championship. I want to beat them and get them out of the way.

What are your thoughts on Coach Rademacher?

I think she's an incredible coach. I think she's funny, sweet, passionate, she cares about the game and she cares about the players. She'll yell at you while you're on the court, but we know that after everything is said and done, she has your back. She's friendly, she's there for you, she's in your corner. She'll reward us. She's just the best coach and I'm glad I play for her.

What does it mean to you to be a Titan?
Being a Titan means to go all out and play hard and give it your best shot. Have pride with what you do, know your role, score and beat your opponent.
