Shayok shot 11-of-14 from the field, 4-of-5 from the line and 10 of her caroms came on the defensive end.
TALE OF TWO HALVES
The Titans shot 36 percent in the first half against Oakland (Nov. 13) and came back from the break to shoot 61 percent in the second stanza, compared to a 29 percent effort from the Golden Grizzlies.
LAST TIME OUT
Detroit senior
Brigid Mulroy ended with a team-high 20 points, but her attempted game-winning 3-pointer as time expired was blocked and the Titans were edged by Canisius in women's basketball action Tuesday evening at Calihan Hall, 54-52.
With 25 seconds left, Mulroy made a trip to the free throw line where she netted her second attempt to tie the game at 52. But Canisius senior Brittane Russell made a game-winning lay-up at the baseline with 4.3 seconds left on the clock. That set up Mulroy's last-ditch shot.
At the 2:30 mark, Detroit (1-3) sophomore
Yar Shayok sank both of her free throws to tie the game at 49 and then Shayok, who ended with a team second-best 11 points, gave Detroit a two-point lead less than a minute later after battling her way through some Canisius defenders for a lay-up. Russell then netted a trey at 1:20 right in front of the Griffs' bench to give Canisius a 52-51 lead.
The Titans came right out of the gate and took control of the first half as Detroit scored 10 unanswered points for its largest lead of the stanza. UDM did not allow a Canisius basket until 15:10 after Griffs senior Ellie Radke hit a jumper, but Mulroy answered with five points to give the Titans a 15-6 advantage right before the 12-minute media timeout. Detroit maintained its lead the entire half and the closest the Golden Griffins would get to the Titans was five, with the second occurring at the break, 27-22.
Detroit sophomore
Jalesa Jones dished out a game-high six assists and added four steals, while Mulroy grabbed a game-best eight rebounds.
The Titans shot 37 percent from the field (18-of-49), while the Griffs had a 23-of-56 showing in the contest (41 percent). Detroit made 10 of 19 at the free throw line, while Canisius missed its lone attempt, and the Griffs outrebounded the Titans, 36-30.
