Coach McCallum's post-game interview on Titan YouTube
Senior forward
Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) led all scorers with 28 points and the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball squad sank 32 free throws in a 93-46 win over Adrian College at Calihan Hall Friday night in the Titans final exhibition game.
In all, five Titans scored 10 or more points in the effort. Kennedy reached double digits in the first half, scoring 16 points while making it to the free-throw line nine times. He would reach double digits from the free throw line alone before the night was over, hitting 16-of-18 for the game to go with 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from three. He also collected six boards and had two steals and a block in just 28 minutes of action.
Adrian sent the Titans to the charity stripe often, and the Titans took advantage of the easy baskets hitting 77 percent (32-of-44).
Junior forward
Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson), sophomore guard
Chase Simon (Detroit, MI/Community), junior guard
Lamar Lee (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) and sophomore guard
Donavan Foster (Chicago, IL/Curie) each tallied double-digit points as well.
Lee tacked on 15 points for Detroit, while Keeling scored 12, Simon scored 11 and Foster scored 10. Simon was the Titans leading rebounder with nine boards as he came up just short of a double-double, while senior guard
Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) had five steals and nine assists.
The Bulldogs tried to throw everything they had at the Titans on the inside, and outscored the Titans in the paint, 16-14, in the first half. But UDM pressured Adrian into making mistakes, and took advantage by scoring 30 points of 25 turnovers.
After the Bulldogs evened the score at 7-7 with 16:48 to go in the first half, the Titans began to pull away. Detroit led by as many as 25 points before heading into the break with a 45-25 lead, thanks in large part to a 16-point first half from Kennedy.
Adrian played the Titans tough on the inside, outscoring Detroit in the paint in the first half, 16-14. When the Titans did go inside on offense, they tended to get fouled. Detroit would put the game away with an 18-6 run to start the second half to take a commanding 64-31 lead.
Detroit would continue its high intensity on offense and defense the rest of the way, holding Adrian to just 14-percent shooting in the second half (5-of-35) and 21 total points cruising to the 47-point victory.
The Titans closed out the exhibition portion of its schedule averaging 92.5 points, while giving up just 43.5 points.
UDM will now get ready for the season opener at #12/13 California on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Game time is set for 11p.m. with the contest televised by ESPNU.
