Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) had a team-high 14 points, but Detroit could not overcome a slow start on offense as the Titans fell to Wright State, 61-48, on Saturday night.
“We easily could have let this get away and lose by 25 or 30, but we fought hard in the second half,” said coach
Ray McCallum. “We have to do a better job on offense, but I like the way we came out and never gave up.”
The Titans had a tough time scoring right from the start as UDM missed its first 10 shots from the field and did not get on the board until the 13:29 mark when
Eulis Stephens (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) hit a pair of free throws. Even with UDM keeping the Wright State offense off balance (WSU was just 1-of-7 from the field to start the contest), the Raiders were able to open a 12-2 lead midway through the first.
Detroit did cut the lead to eight on three occasions, the latest at 17-9 when sophomore
Ryan Janer (Bay City, MI/All Saints Central) connected on a 3-pointer with 6:18 to go, but Wright State ended the first half on a 15-6 run to take a 32-15 halftime advantage.
UDM outscored WSU 33-29 in the second half, even after getting down by as many as 25, 45-20. Detroit, though, never showed any quit quickly going on a 9-1 run to trim the deficit to 17, 46-29, with 13:30 left in the game. From there, the Titans continued to score, but could not get the key stops defensively as WSU stayed in control with a double digit lead the rest of the way.
Kennedy nearly recorded his second career double-double, finishing the night with a game-high nine rebounds. Senior
Chris Hayes (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) added six points and eight boards, while Stephens netted seven markers.
Detroit made 14-of-20 free throws and dominated the glass, 37-23.
Detroit returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when UDM makes its fourth trip of the year to Chicago, this time to take on Jesuit rival Loyola. Game time is set for 9:00 p.m. (CST).
