Titans Downed By Bellarmine

Box Score

Six different Titans scored on the day as the UDM men's lacrosse team made its way to Louisville, KY, where Detroit dropped an 18-8 decision to Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon.

“I felt like we improved from last week, especially on offense,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “We need to fix things on defense, but we played well for three periods and now we have to put a full game together.”

UDM's (0-2) offense was led by sophomore Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic ) and freshman Vince Wigdahl (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley), who each netted two goals. Gregson also handed out a pair of assists. Freshmen Brad Janer (Novi, Mi/Detroit Catholic Central) and John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) also had a goal and an assist on the day, while senior Michael Schumacher (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) and junior Pat O'Shea (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) each added a marker.

The Titans fell behind from the start as Bellarmine (1-0) took a 4-0 lead in the first period. Detroit was able to cut into the deficit when Gregson found the back of the net just a minute into the second quarter.

The Knights would get that goal back, but UDM struck for two scores in a span of 20-seconds midway through the second, thanks to Nowicki and O'Shea, to get within two, 5-3. However, BU ended the second period with three straight goals and outscored the Titans 9-3 in the third to take control of the game.

Detroit will have an extra week off before returning to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when the Titans face Manhattan on the campus of Robert Morris in Moon Township, PA. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
