The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 60-50 decision to Cleveland State in Horizon League action at the Wolstein Center Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Titans fall to 9-17 on the year (5-10 HL), while the Vikings improve to 16-10 overall (10-4).

Junior Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) scored the Titans first field goal of the afternoon at 16:05 to pull Detroit within one (5-4) and then senior Sandi Brown gave Detroit its first lead about three minutes later (8-7) as she hit a midrange jumper off an assist from freshman Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing).

The Vikings responded with a 14-2 run, which included eight points from junior Kailey Klein. Jones followed this with a 5-0 scoring spurt of her own and redshirt freshman Talicia Washington (Auburn Hills, MI/Avondale) was able to cut Detroit's deficit to four after netting a layup at 1:05. In the closing seconds, Klein drained one of her four treys of the afternoon to put the score at 26-19 at the break.

The first two baskets in the second stanza for the Titans were from long range, coming from Jones and senior Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) with Brown's bucket pulling Detroit within five (30-25) at the 17:47 mark. Freshman Jaleesa Trussell (Racine, WI/Case) scored one of her two field goals at 9:03 to also cut CSU's lead to five (40-35), but that was the closest Detroit would get to the Vikings the remainder of the contest.

CSU had the largest lead for either squad with just under three minutes remaining after Klein hit one from beyond the arc to put the score at 59-45. The Titans ended the game on a 5-1 run, which included a 3-pointer from junior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) and two made free throws from Jones.

Jones netted a personal-best 14 points after shooting 3-of-6 from the field, while Brown added a team second-best 11 points. Jones also led the Titans in rebounds with eight, all on the defensive end, and matched her career-high of five steals, which was also a game-best.

Klein led all scorers with 24 points, while CSU senior Dominique Butler pulled down a game-high 10 caroms.

The Titans shot 33 percent on the afternoon (17-of-51), while CSU had a 23-of0-48 showing from the field (48 percent). The Vikings had a slight 13-12 advantage in steals and CSU also outrebounded Detroit, 34-28.

The Titans have three regular season games remaining, all of which will be played at Calihan Hall, with the first against Wright State on Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
