The Detroit Titans women's lacrosse team made history on Saturday with its first-ever home game, but UDM was edged by Niagara, 9-8, at Titan Field. The Titans now own a 1-2 overall record, while the Purple Eagles improve to 1-1 on the year.
With 40 seconds remaining in the game and Niagara ahead by a score of 9-8, Detroit freshman
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON/Anderson CVI) had an opportunity to tie the game. Mahorn won the draw and took it down the field and had a direct shot, but Purple Eagles senior goalie Whitney Gill tallied one of her 20 saves of the game and then Niagara cleared the ball as time expired.
“I was definitely excited about playing our first home game and I am very happy with our effort and our defense against Niagara,” said Detroit head coach Mary Ann Meltzer. “It was great seeing all these fans here, especially because of the cold weather. I was nervous that no one would want to brave the weather, but they did and the fans saw a really competitive game in our first contest at Titan Field.”
The Titans did not hesitate in getting on the scoreboard as freshman
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson), who ended with a team-high four goals, netted her first goal just 19 seconds into the contest. Detroit freshman
Kandice Bogatz (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) made the score 2-0 at 16:48, while Boissonneault tacked on another goal exactly a minute later.
“I was thrilled to win the draw and score the first-ever goal for us at Titan Field,” commented Boissonneault. “One of our goals was to score first in this game, so being able to get the first home goal for our team was very special.”
Three different players were able to find the back of the net for Niagara in the final 15 minutes of the opening stanza to have the halftime score read, 3-3.
With Detroit down by a score of 7-4, Mahorn scored two straight goals within less than a minute of each other to pull the Titans within one. Both freshmen
Rachel Iturralde (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon) and
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino Grace) each earned one assist on those goals.
Niagara senior Vanessa Schultz scored one of her game-high five goals at 7:43 to put the score at 8-6 in favor of the Purple Eagles, but Eidem responded as she cut the deficit to one for the Titans with just under five minutes remaining while Boissonneault collected her last goal of the contest with 48 seconds left.
Detroit ended with a 33-23 advantage in shots and the Titans also garnered 36 ground balls to Niagara's 23. UDM freshman goalie
Brett Yenger (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) ended with nine saves after playing all 60 minutes in net for the Titans.
The Titans will return to action when they travel to Le Moyne for a 4 p.m. match-up on March 5.
