LAST TIME OUT
The Detroit Titans women's basketball team's late second half rally fell short as the Titans suffered a 65-58 setback to Wright State at the Ervin J. Nutter Center on Jan. 31.
Trailing by 10 with just 2:29 left in the game (57-47), Detroit went on a 9-2 run, which was sparked by a jumper from junior
Brigid Mulroy and a 3-pointer from junior
Heather Hatter to pull within three, 59-53.
After WSU's sophomore LaShawna Thomas missed the front end of a one-and-one, UDM had the ball with a chance to tie but committed a costly turnover, which forced the Titans to foul. Raider sophomore Shey Peddy made both free throws attempts to put Wright State up by five, 61-56, with 1:23 remaining. On the next trip down the floor, Detroit lost the ball and, once again, was forced to foul. Peddy connected on two more attempts at the line to help secure the victory for the Raiders.
Detroit also could not capitalize on its free throw opportunities as Wright State was in foul trouble for most of the second half putting the Titans in the double bonus. Consequently, UDM only made 13-of-25 attempts (52 percent) in the second half and shot 15-for-29 (51.7 percent) for the game.
In the first half, Detroit built an early 8-4 lead by pressuring Wright State, which took the Raiders out of their rhythm. After a 30 second timeout, WSU regrouped as both teams traded baskets over the next 10 minutes. With the game tied at 17 (5:44), WSU went on a quick 5-0 spurt, before a triple by junior
Chanica Hall pulled UDM within two, 22-20 with just under five minutes left. The game remained nip and tuck down the stretch with freshman Maria Bennett scoring WSU's last nine points, all from beyond the arc, to give the Raiders a 31-27 lead at intermission.
The Titans were led by Mulroy who tallied 18 points after shooting a blistering 4-for-8 from behind the arc, while senior
Sandi Brown poured in 16 points, which included a 10-of-13 showing from the charity stripe. Brown pulled down a team second-best six caroms, while Hatter grabbed a career-high eight boards and added seven points. Hall scored seven points, tied a season-high four steals and matched her personal-best of seven assists.
