Detroit's women's basketball team shot 25-of-30 from the line and outscored Valparaiso by 15 points in the second half to help secure a 62-47 victory in a Horizon League match-up at the Athletics-Recreation Center in Indiana Friday evening. The Titans improve to 7-14 overall (3-7 HL), while the Crusaders fall to 10-10 on the year (5-5).
Juniors
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) and
Heather Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell) each netted 13 points for Detroit, which tied Hatter's career-high, while junior
Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde St. Margaret's) added 11 for the Titans. Hall dished out a game-high and personal-best eight assists, while senior
Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for her fourth double carom showing thus far this year.
After being down 13-3 with 12:51 on the clock, Detroit responded with seven unanswered points, five of which came from Mulroy. Then, freshman
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) pulled UDM within one (14-13) after draining a 3-pointer and Allen then gave the Titans their first lead at 2:30 after sinking another trey to put the score at 17-16.
Detroit held Valpo without a field goal for 11:40, which was snapped by junior Sylwia Zabielewicz who hit a midrange jumper at 1:11 to give the Crusaders a 20-19 advantage. Hatter tied the game at 21 about 20 seconds later (21-21) and Hall dished out a pass to Mulroy with 10 seconds remaining to end the half tied at 25.
After a 3-pointer from senior Leah Hochstetler pushed Valpo ahead by one (31-30) at 13:24, that was the last the Crusaders would have a lead the remainder of the contest. Detroit responded with a 12-4 run, which included eight consecutive free throws, four from Hall. Freshman
Jaleesa Trussell (Racine, WI/Case) pushed Detroit's lead to double figures (41-52) after sinking a trey with just over five minutes remaining. Trussell also helped give the Titans their largest lead (62-45) after making both free throw attempts with eight seconds left in the game.
Valpo junior Lauren Kenney collected a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Launa Hochstetler added 12 points for the Crusaders.
The Titans owned the boards as they pulled down a season-high 49 rebounds to Valpo's 35 and Detroit ended with 12 assists to the Crusaders' nine. At one point during the game, Detroit made 20 straight free throws to help with its 83 percent showing at the line.
Detroit will return to action on Feb. 8 when the Titans face Butler in Indianapolis, IN, on Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.
