The Titan men's golfers improved their team score on Day Two but finished where they started, claiming sixth place at the Treasure Coast Classic in Fort Pierce, FL – their first action of the spring.
The Titans opened the tournament hosted by St. John's with a 298 total and came back Wednesday with a 294, missing out on fifth place by just three strokes. Florida Atlantic led wire-to-wire to claim the team championship at the windswept Indian Hills Golf Club, while Boston College grabbed second place.
Individually, Detroit sophomore Jeff Clarridge earned a share of sixth place with a 71-72-143 card. Junior David Byrne was next in line for the Titans as he tied for 14th (72-74-146). Freshman Mark Hicks actually had the best UDM showing of the Wednesday round, following his opening 81 with a solid 71.
“These weren't the greatest scoring conditions for us – it was cold, it was windy, and the grainy greens were really hard to get a feel for – but we did a lot of god things over the two days here,” coach Mark Engel said. “Jeff was really steady and Mark made a tremendous turnaround from the first day. Florida teams took three of the first four places and we figured that would happen, but this tournament was just the first step toward where we want to be by the end of the spring.”
The Titans return to action on March 23-24 at William & Mary's First Market Bank Intercollegiate, to be contested again this year on Kingsmill Resort's famed River Course.
