The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team inaugural season ended on Sunday in Farmville, VA, as the Titans fell by a score of 19-8 to Longwood University in the National Lacrosse Conference Championship game at the Athletics Complex. The Titans, seeded second in the tournament, ended the year with a 5-9 record, while the top-seeded Lancers completed 2009 with an 11-6 overall mark.
Detroit came out strong against Longwood as the Titans scored the first three goals of the game, starting with one from freshman
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino-Grace), off an assist from freshman
Rachel Iturralde (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon) at 27:05. Freshman
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson) then went on to net the next two for UDM. The Lancers then scored five in a row, two of which came from sophomore Morgan Illian.
Freshman
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON/Anderson CVI) added to Detroit's point total in the first half as she found the back of the net with just under five minutes remaining, but the Lancers went into the break with a 9-4 advantage.
Boissonneault started off the scoring for the Titans in the second half (19:20) to put the score at 11-5, while sophomore
Olivia Mendoza (Lansing, MI/Catholic Central) netted a goal for Detroit off a free position shot at 15:40. Mahorn added another goal on the afternoon with just over 10 minutes left in the contest, while senior
Megan Canty (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) scored Detroit's final goal of the day at 2:08 to put the score at 17-8.
Longwood sophomore Karli Brentlinger tallied a game-high five goals, while senior Dee Warehime added a team second-best three goals for the Lancers.
Detroit freshman
Brett Yenger (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) tallied 25 saves, while allowing 19 goals in 60 minutes of action. Longwood sophomore Juli Liebig started the game for the Lancers in net and earned the win as she only allowed four goals in 30 minutes of play.
Canty, Boissonneault and Yenger were each named to the 2009 NLC All-Tournament Team for their efforts during this weekend's games.
The Titans' inaugural season is now complete and will return to action at the start of the 2010 campaign.
