At the 85-minute mark of Friday's contest, IUPUI finally got on the scoreboard against the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team to force overtime. The Jaguars would end the game with under three minutes remaining in the first extra frame to top the Titans, 2-1, in Indianapolis.
With just over one minute remaining in the first half, freshman
Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) gave the Titans (1-2-1) a 1-0 lead going into intermission.
“How can you complain about a game like that?” said head coach
Mike Lupenec “We played some very good soccer and had a good effort out of everyone, and contained some very dangerous players on their team.
“The only chances they had were the two they scored on and I feel bad for the girls because they deserved to win this game and it just didn't happen.”
After the Titans controlled the rebound from an unsuccessful corner kick attempt, sophomore
Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) found Dzuris to her left and the rookie directed the ball into the upper left hand corner of the goal. It was Korson's first assist of the season.
Dzuris led Detroit with three shots in the contest, while freshman
Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley), senior
Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) and Korson each tallied two shots. The Titans were in control for a majority of the contest, outshooting the Jaguars 13-11, and attempting five corner kicks to the home team's four.
The Jaguars (4-2-0) hit pay dirt after the Titans were whistled for a foul near midfield. On the restart, IUPUI's Stephanie Hoffman hit a ball inside the Titans' goal box that pinballed off several players before finding its way to Stacey Lavack, who punched it into the back of the net.
UDM worked to get several more scoring opportunities before the end of regulation, but came up empty handed and headed into overtime for the second straight game. The Titans were on the offensive to begin the extra period and recorded three quick shots, but came away with nothing to show for it.
Then it was the Jaguars' turn to go on the offensive, recording three shots of their own, and connecting in the 98th minute when a through pass from Katrina Maccuray allowed Meaghan Haas to dribble the ball right into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
“We need to be able to close games out,” said Lupenec. “We created some good chances throughout the second half and even in overtime, but we didn't finish like we needed to.”
The Titans backline led by senior
Alauna Pierce (Toronto, ON/Mowat ) and sophomore
Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, O /Brecksville) repeatedly turned away the Jaguars on scoring opportunities and apparent breakaways, and made work easier on sophomore keeper
Joanna Hinde (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) who came up with two saves. With the win IUPUI evened the all- time series between the two programs at 3-3-2.
The Titans return to Indiana on Sunday for a 6:00 p.m. contest with IPFW. The Mastodons are 0-3-2 this season and the last time the two teams met was in 2008, a 3-0 Detroit victory for UDM's fifth straight win in the series.
