TITANS FEAST ON FALCON
In her first collegiate game freshman forward
Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) redirected a pass from junior midfielder
Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) into the back of the net to give the Titans an early lead they would not relinquish. Detroit was unable to find the back of the net again as the teams played to a stalemate in the second half, but the Titans were in control throughout. UDM outshot Notre Dame 19-4, putting 11 of those shots on goal, and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks over the visitors. Junior forward Selena Stanksi (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) led the Titans with five shots, while Kochanski took four.
BACK TO THE BUFFET
The Titans (1-0-0) will look to win back-to-back games to start the season for the first time since 1997 when they take the field against Bowling Green, as well as avenge an early loss last season. Detroit traveled to Bowling Green in 2008, falling 4-0 to the Falcons who ended the season with 12-6-4 mark as well as a trip to the Mid American Conference semifinals. This year they're off to a 1-2-0, having fallen to Big Ten members Ohio State and Michigan State while defeating Indiana State 2-1. Offensively, Bowling Green is led by sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro who has notched one goal and one assist through three games and has put four shots on goal, and in goal junior Alexa Arsenault has played 135 of 270 minutes for the Falcons and has made 12 saves and sports a goals against average of 2.00.
YOUTH A KEY FOR TITANS
Carter was just one of three freshman in the Titans' starting lineup Wednesday. Also cracking the starting ranks were midfielders
Mary Leone (St. Clair Shores, MI/Lakeview) and
Janae Paveglio (Flushing, MI/Flushing). Three more rookies made their first collegiate appearance, including defender
Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland), defender
Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) and midfielder Lindsey Saunders (Pasadena, MD/Northeast). UDM features only five juniors and seniors this season, and with 16 underclassmen the freshman and sophomore classes will be expected to put in some quality minutes.
