The 2009 cross country season got underway on Saturday as senior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) led a small Titan squad at the 6k Golden Grizzly Open, held at the Oakland University campus in Rochester.

Gould took over two minutes off his 2008 event, finishing as the top Titan in 11th place with a run of 19:46.

“A fantastic race for Alex,” said head coach Guy Murray. “I am proud of Alex and excited by his run. He has come a long way with consistent hard work and is going to be a strong varsity contributor this year.”

Junior Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) also took time off his 2008 race, taking 13th in 20:12, a 33-second improvement, while sophomore Bob Radlich (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) finished 21st in his official Titan debut with a time of 20:31.

Junior Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic) returned to the course after redshirting last season and was the fourth UDM harrier in at 20:43 for 27th place, while two sophomores closed out the squad with Gregg Saldutti (Waterford, MI/Our Lady Of The Lakes) earning 38th in 21:24 and junior Brian Greenhoe (Sand Lake, MI/Grant) finishing 49th in 22:14.

“A positive opener as these guys all showed they are contenders for the varsity 7 when we run everyone,” added Murray.

The Titans will return to the course next Saturday as UDM hosts the 23rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational at Cass Benton Park in Northville. For more information, visit the event's link by clicking here
