Post Game Press Conference On Titan YouTube
HLN Video Highlights
Sophomore
Chase Simon netted a career-high 33 points and Detroit shot nearly 56 percent for the game as UDM used an explosive 26-5 second half run to rout Milwaukee, 81-65, on Thursday evening at U.S. Cellular Arena.
On the night, Simon was a career-best 15-of-24 from the field to go with his first career double-double, adding a game and career high 12 rebounds. He became the first Titan to net 30+ in a game since Jon Goode had 35 at UIC on Jan. 19, 2008.
“My first three in the second half, the way it went off it felt good and I just had confidence to shoot it again,” said Simon. “In shoot around, I told coach I had a good feel for the ball.”
Junior
Xavier Keeling scored 20 points with four boards and four assists and sophomore
Eli Holman came close to his seventh double-double with 15 points and nine boards along with four blocks. Sophomore
Donavan Foster grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, while senior
Woody Payne pulled down a season-best seven caroms and handed out five assists.
Detroit (12-6, 5-2 HL) trailed by seven, 41-34, when the Titan defense clamped down on the Panthers, forcing UWM to miss its next 17 shots from the field. Detroit would eventually tie the game at 42, but a Milwaukee (10-8, 2-4) free throw once again had the Titans down, 43-42, with 17:19 left.
That was when Simon silenced the home town crowd by scoring 16 straight for the Titans en route to 22 second half points. Only three UWM free throws accounted for their scoring in that span as Detroit raced out to a 12-point lead, 58-46.
“I thought Milwaukee came out ready to play with a strong post game and the strength of their 3-point shooting," said head coach
Ray McCallum. “They had six threes in the first half and we haven't given that up to anyone. We wanted to concentrate on choking off the three-point line and we did a good job of that in the second half. We then rode the back of
Chase Simon, who just carried us in the second half with an extremely hot hand.”
Detroit would later extend its advantage to as many as 21 before ending the game with its ninth double digit victory of the season.
The Titans made a season-high 33 field goals and outrebounded the Panthers, 47-31. UDM held Milwaukee to 30 percent shooting for the game, including just 26 percent in the second half. Detroit also dominated in the paint outscoring the opposition, 36-16, on the night.
Detroit will finish its two-game Wisconsin road trip on Saturday as the Titans visit Green Bay in a battle for second place in the Horizon League. The Phoenix come into the game at 12-6, 5-2 in the conference. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. (EST) at the Resch Center.
