FOX Sports Detroit video recap

Over 4,100 fans saw another game come down to the wire as the Titans had the ball and a chance to tie the contest, but two shots with less than five seconds left just didn't fall UDM's way as Detroit fell, 61-59, on Saturday afternoon. The game was part of Homecoming Weekend at UDM and was televised live on FOX Sports Detroit.

“We came out on our heels and they were in rhythm,” said head coach Ray McCallum. “We talked at halftime about that. We are a very strong second half team and the effort we got put us in a position to win the game.”

The loss drops the Titans to 12-8 on the year and 5-4 in the Horizon League, while Wright State moved to 12-8 and 5-4 in the conference.

After a missed Wright State free throw, UDM took control of the ball with 19 seconds left. With the clock winding down, sophomore Chase Simon's (Detroit, MI/Community) shot was too strong, but junior Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson) was able to corral the offensive board and put up one last attempt that was just wide as the horn sounded.

The Titans put together a ferocious rally to even put themselves in a position to tie. Down by 11, 58-47, with 2:58 left, Detroit would end the game on a 12-2 run. Keeling started the spurt with a 3-pointer and that was followed by a trey from senior Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti). Wright State then went on to get a bucket inside, but Vaughn Duggins' shot was blocked by sophomore Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond), which set up a layup for Keeling and the Titans were within three, 58-55, with one minute on the clock.

After a pair of free throws by the Raiders, Simon connected on a three to trim the deficit to one (60-59) before WSU split a pair of charity shots that preceded the final play.

“We have nine games left in this conference season and I told the guys, every one of them is important and if we keep giving that same effort, we are going to win our share,” added McCallum.

Simon ended the game with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds, while Keeling had 12 markers and four rebounds. Junior Curtis Eatmon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) added a season-best eight points and sophomore Donavan Foster (Chicago, IL/Curie) chipped in with seven.

UDM outrebounded the Raiders 38-31 and held WSU shooting to just 33 percent from the field, including just 5-of-20 from the outside.

Detroit returns to action on Thursday with a basketball doubleheader as the women's team hosts Youngstown State at 5:00 p.m., with the men to follow at 7:00 p.m. against Loyola.
