WBB Q&A: Freshman Cherridy Thornton

Detroit freshman forward Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) is featured in this week's women's basketball Q&A.

Why did you choose Detroit?
I chose Detroit because I liked all the coaching staff: Coach Emily, Coach Carrie and I just met Coach Geary this year, but I love him already, and Coach Rad(emacher). Also, I chose Detroit because it's close to home and my mom.

I love being this close to home; I go home a lot and my mom is able to come to every home game.

What other schools recruited you?
Temple, South Carolina, Eastern Michigan and Hawai'i.

Did you know of any of your current teammates before you came here because of PSL?
I knew Meisha (Fambro) because she played for Crockett. I also knew of J (Jalesa Jones) and Domo (Dominique Dixon) because they were older than me.

Who are you closest with on the team?
Meisha and me weren't friends before we played together here at Detroit; we just knew of each other.

What was the experience like for you when you played in your first collegiate game?
I was so nervous; I was real nervous. Once I got on the court, it went away though.

Being halfway through the season, what has been your most memorable moment thus far this year?
When the whole team was in the lockerroom and we had a dance battle. We moved the coaches and cranked the radio and we were all just in a circle just having a dance battle after practice. Meisha and I were on a team versus Yar (Shayok) and J (Jalesa Jones) and they won.

Who is your roommate?
I don't have a roommate because I have a single.

What are some of the things you will do or the team will do to pass time on the road?
We do so much stuff. We'll play the card game, Mafia, or we'll spend time on our laptaps or we'll play Manhunt, a version of hide-and-seek.

On the bus, we sleep or we'll give performances, like rapping, or we'll watch movies.

How old were you when you started playing basketball?
About six-years-old.

What other sport do you enjoy, besides basketball?
I like swimming. I LOVE swimming. I want to enjoy golf, but I don't know how to play. It's such a calm sport, you can just walk to the next spot; at least you don't have to run.

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what's the story behind the nickname?
Turk. When I was little, I was short and chubby, so my family always called me Turkey, so when I got older everyone just shortened it to Turk.

Who has your biggest influence been throughout your playing career?
My high school coach, Coach Knotts, and Coach Hall, who was my AAU coach.

What professional athlete to you most admire?
Dirk Nowitzki. Because that's kind of what my style of play is like. He's big and he can shoot and dribble; he has an inside-out game. He also wears #41.

What are you majoring in?
Civil engineering, but I want to graduate with a double major in that and education.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I'm going straight to where the money is at. If the money is in my profession or the money is overseas, wherever the most money is, is where I want to be.

I eventually want to be a teacher in high school. I want to help out kids and give them guidance.

What is one thing that people don't know about you?
How clean I am. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. I'm a tad compulsive about keeping things clean.

If you wrote a song about your life, what would you name it?
"Tell Tales of Turk."

Is there any significance to #41?
Dirk Nowitzki. I used to always wear #13, lucky #13. Then I decided I didn't want to wear that number anymore and everyone said that I played like Nowitzki, so that's when I changed it up. It was my first year in high school.

Do you have any pregame superstitions?
I have to take a long shower. I used to take six-hour showers before games; just steam-up.

I also have to pray when the National Anthem is being sung.

What kind of music do you listen to before the game?
Some music that gets me hyped up, like Snoop Dog.

What was your first meeting like with Coach Rademacher?
She recruited me. The first time she saw me play, I didn't have a good game and at the end she said, "Cherridy are you going to rough up out there?" or something along those lines. Then the next game I scored like 30 and when I went to Coach Knotts' office to meet with her, Coach Rad started off by apologizing what she said to me the first time we met.

What are your thoughts on Coach Rademacher?
Coach Rad(emacher) really motivates everyone and we feed off her high energy. She's overall a good coach; she knows the aspects of the game and prepares for the game well.

What does it mean to you to be a Titan?
To me being a Titan means family forever. When we get done playing here after four years, I could call on my 'sisters' for anything and we'll be there for each other. I also get to represent my city in a positive manner.
