Titans Fall At Wright State

Box Score

Despite a late rally, the Titans fell 2-1 at Wright State in Horizon League action from Alumni Field in Dayton, OH, on Friday.

Junior Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) scored in the 63rd minute for Detroit (4-4-3/1-1-0 HL) after she tipped the ball passed the goalkeeper from just inside the six-yard box.

After two shots against the Titans in the first 10 minutes of the game, Detroit came back on the attack in the 12th minute with three shots and two corner kicks before Wright State (4-7-0/1-2-0 HL) got on the board first in the 19th minute.

"When you give up soft goals and totally dominate a team you should win, but soccer games are cruel sometimes,” said head coach Mike Lupenec after the defeat.

The Raiders would score again at 49:13 to take a 2-0 lead, but Detroit continued to press and generated four corner kicks in the 10 minutes following the goal before Korson put the Titans on the board.

The Titans continued to apply pressure trying to push for the equalizer taking three shots and three corner kicks in the last 10 minutes of play. Junior Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) had the best opportunity with just under 10 minutes left as the ball came to her on the goal line, but a rushed attempt caused the ball to hit the crossbar.

“The second goal against is always going to kill you. I thought we outplayed them and should have won, but games do not always finish with the result you want," continued Lupenec.

Freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made one save for the Titans as each team had three shots on goal.

Detroit had 12 corner kicks in the game compared to two for Wright State. The Titans also held a 13-9 shooting advantage over the Raiders.

The next match for Detroit will be Sunday against Loyola as part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team. The men will host Green Bay at 11:00 a.m., with the women's game to follow right after.
