CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The men's fencing team sent three individuals to the North American Cup this weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Junior
Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Home School), senior
Brad Coon (Jenison, MI/Hudsonville), and freshman
Yaroslav Ivanov (Louisville, KY/Ballard) all competed in the event.
“It's a good measuring stick to see where we need to go and with this being the first competition of the season it gives us a good first test,” said head coach
Todd Dressell.
The tournament was set up with each fencer having five bouts in pool play. The pools were set up in order to advance the tournament with the top 75% of fencers in the pools advancing to the direct elimination rounds.
“The format is a bit different than other events because this is more of an individual competition. It's geared more towards selecting national team members. It helps us compete against stronger competition,” continued Dressell.
Purdy-Sachs was the best Titan as he was 3-3 in pool competition. He then competed in a direct elimination event dropping a 15-9 decision. He finished 99th out of 188 total fencers.
“You have to stay mentally tough and always be ready for the next bout in these types of competitions,” added Dressell.
The next event for the fencing team is December 12 as they will compete at Wayne State.
