Vincent J. Banonis, Sr., age 89, of Southfield, Mich. died October 23, 2010 at Providence Hospital, Southfield. Banonis, a 1977 inductee to the Detroit Titan Hall of Fame, was a stand-out linebacker and center and went on to a successful professional career in the NFL with the Chicago Cardinals and Detroit Lions.
He is the beloved husband of Marilyn and loving father of Carolyn Anglin (friend Gary Helisek). He was preceded in death by three wonderful sons, Vince Jr., Jim, and Steve. He is survived by many special relatives and friends and will be greatly missed. His wonderful stories will continue to be treasured by all.
Vince attended Detroit Catholic Central High School and was recently also inducted in their inaugural Sports Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University of Detroit and was named as a College Football All-American. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served as Lieutenant from 1942-1946.
Vince's professional career included a 1947 World Championship with the Cardinals as well as two more titles with the Lions. He was an inductee in both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
