Detroit Women's Soccer Opens Up Offense In 4-1 Win

Box Score

Detroit played at Stambaugh Stadium at Youngstown State and registered its second highest goal total of the year as the Titans won by a 4-1 score.

The Titans (5-4-4/2-1-1 Horizon League) scored two in the first half and two more goals in the second for the win over the Penguins (3-11-0/1-4-0 HL).

Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) scored first at 18:16 of the first half when Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) took a free kick and played the ball in the center of the 18-yard box. Suschak placed a header to score her fourth of the year.

Dzuris assisted on the second goal later in the first half on another free kick. At 36:18, her ball was placed directly on net but the goalkeeper couldn't handle the shot and Rebecca Pidgeon (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) scored her third career goal and first of the 2010 season.

The defense also played tough holding Youngstown to just two shots on goal in the opening half.

“We went into a rough environment and we got the result we were looking for in a conference win. Anytime you get three points on the road is a good victory for us,” said head coach Mike Lupenec.

In the second half, Detroit added two more as two Titans each tallied their first career goals. Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland) scored in the 74th minute as she played a rebound after a Dzuris corner kick into the back of the net and Janae Paveglio (Flushing, MI/Flushing) scored less than two minutes later netting her first career goal for the Titans after receiving the ball just inside the 18-yard box and moving around a defender and taking a shot that beat the Penguin goalkeeper.

“We dictated most of the game and it resulted in a big win for this program, but we have to play for the whole 90 minutes. That late goal was probably the worse thing about today's game,” continued Lupenec.

Freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) saved five out of six shots in net for Detroit.

The Titans' next opponent will be Cleveland State this Sunday as the Vikings will head to Titan Field for a match scheduled to start at noon.
