INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman
Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) scored on Detroit's third shot of the game but Butler scored the game winner at 82:55 of the second half to take a 2-1 victory in the final game of the season for the Titans.
Quarrell took a shot from just inside the 18-yard box after she dribbled past a defender and netted her fourth goal in the last five games. The goal at 20:19 of the first half was her fourth straight for the Titan (8-7-5/3-3-2 Horizon League) offense.
Butler (9-10-0/6-2-0 HL) scored its second goal off a header on a corner kick after scoring the first goal just before half time.
“I thought that first goal in the first half we were dictating the game and our late mistake in the first half changed the game,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec.
“We had a good year and it's encouraging to know that we'll have a lot of players coming back next season,”
The Titans improved on a 2009 record of (3-13-2/1-6-1 HL). Last year was the first year in Lupenec's 18 years as head coach that the team finished out of the Horizon League Tournament.
For seniors
Archana Wadhawan (Troy, MI/Troy) and
Alauna Pierce (Toronto, ON/Mowat), today was the final game wearing the uniform of the Detroit Titans.
“This was a year where our chemistry was the best that I can remember,” said assistant coach
Jamie Huff. “The girls got along real well and as a result, we played better as a team.”
Freshman goalkeeper
Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made five saves for the Titans in the first half and six overall as Butler outshot Detroit 11-9 in the match.
“I'm proud of our team for all that we have done this year. It's been a learning experience for a lot of your younger girls and we'll be better next year for it,” added Lupenec.
