INDIANAPOLIS - Junior defender
Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) and freshman forward
Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) were both named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team.
Suschak was a model of consistency on the Titan's defensive line this season and helped Detroit to a No. 6 seed in the Horizon League Tournament. She played every minute in the playoffs and was a big part of the team's defensive effort in the tournament. Suschak also finished with five goals this season placing her in a tie for second best on the team.
Detroit won 2-1 over Cleveland State last Saturday in the quarterfinals while falling in a 2-1 decision to Butler in the conference semifinals Friday bringing this year's season to a close.
Quarrell scored three goals in the conference tournament including both markers in the Cleveland State win. In that match, her first goal in the 42nd minute tied the game 1-1 and her second at 88:11 won it for the Titans as she recorded her first career game-winning-goal.
In the Butler game, she scored her sixth of the year at 20:19 to put the Titans up 1-0 but the Bulldogs scored two goals in the second half to take a 2-1 win. Quarrell led the team in both goals (6) and points (15) this season.
Suschak and Quarrell were also recognized last Friday with Horizon League honors as Suschak was named to the All-Horizon League first team and Quarrell was named to the second team and also the All-Newcomer Team. They are the first Titans to earn All-Tournament recognition since 2006 when four Detroit players made the team.
“We had a good year and it's encouraging to know that we'll have a lot of players coming back next season,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec after Friday's contest.
Detroit (8-7-5/3-3-2 Horizon League) improved on last year's record of (3-13-2/1-6-1 HL) and this season made the Horizon League Tournament for the 17th time in 18 years.
