ON TAP
Saturday marks the end of the season-long homestand and the start to the Horizon League conference slate with Wright State paying a visit to Calihan. The balance of the HL schedule begins in earnest Dec. 30 with a home tilt against Green Bay. UDM will play four games- all on the road-- prior to its next conference game on Dec. 30 (home vs. Green Bay).
ABOUT WRIGHT STATE
The Raiders are 3-4 heading into Saturday's contest. Their most-recent action came on Wednesday at Cincinnati, falling 77-69 to the Bearcats. WSU is led by Preseason All-HL Second Teamer Vaughn Duggins, who pours-in 16.3 points per game. The Raiders are under the guidance of first-year head coach Billy Donlon, a former assistant under Brad Brownell for the past four seasons.
SAME STATE, SAME FATE
Both the Titans and Raiders faced non-conferences foes from the state of Ohio Wednesday and both fell by the same exact score: 77-69. It snapped a three-game winning streak for Detroit while WSU extended its losing streak to three in a row.
WRIGHT THE SHIP
Detroit is looking to shrug off a 10-game skid to Wright State Saturday. The Raiders were a thorn in the Titans' side last season, downing UDM three times-- twice in the regular season and then ending Detroit's run in the Horizon League tourney semifinals.
MY TURN!
All five Detroit starters are averaging double digits in points this season. The balanced attack has seen all five players as the top scorer during the last five games (Calliste, Holman, Minnerath, McCallum, Simon consecutively). Detroit has used the same starting lineup for all eight games so far this season.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
Eli Holman leads the Horizon League in both offensive (4.4rpg) and defensive (7.1rpg) rebounds per game in the early going. He is also second in field goal percentage, connecting on 62.5 percent of his shots (45-of-72).
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST, TOO...
The first NCAA Division I national rankings were released Monday and
Eli Holman's name appears in three different categories. Coming into the week, his five double-doubles are tied for the most in the country and he is 10th in rebounds per game (11.3) and 11th in field goal percentage (.677).
GIMME FIVE
Detroit is in the midst of a season-long five-game homestand, culminating Saturday with the conference opener against Wright State. The Titans hosted three games in the Legends Classic over the Thanksgiving weekend, welcoming in Albany, Bowling Green and Niagara on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Following Wednesday's non-conference tilt against Akron, the stretch concludes with the Horizon League-opener against Wright State on Dec. 4.
HOLMAN: PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Eli Holman picked-up the first Detroit Horizon League Player of the Week honor Monday for his performance during the Legends Classic. The junior center averaged 14 points and 12.3 rebounds to help the Titans to a 3-1 week, including three straight wins in as many days at the Legends Classic at Calihan Hall Firday through Sunday. Holman etched a new career high with 27 points in the Titans' 84-82 double-overtime win over Albany Friday. He also posted three straight double-doubles during the Classic en route to Most Valuable Player accolades. His five double-double games this season is tied for the most in the country.
HOLMAN EARNS NATIONAL HONOR, TOO
Eli Holman won accolades from a national outlet when Jesuit Basketball Spotlight named Holman its National Player of the Week. Eli's performance was tops among the 28 Jesuit basketball schools across the country (all divisions).
MVP DEJA VU
This whole MVP award is nothing new to
Eli Holman. The junior was also named the MVP of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament last season. He averaged 16.3 points and 12.3 rebounds in wins over host Albany, Robert Morris and Alcorn State.
MINNERATH, HOLMAN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM
While Holman was named the MVP of the Legends Classic, fellow frontcourt-mate
Nick Minnerath was also named to the All-Tournament Team. The pair made Detroit the only team with more than one representative named all-tourney. Minnerath tallied point totals of 13, 14 and 10 at the tournament.
NO TURNS
After struggling with the turnover bug a bit in the early season, Detroit took care of the basketball in record form on Friday. Even though the game was extended 10 minutes with the two overtime periods, the Titans posted a new season low with only seven miscues. The eye-popping stat was that UDM did not turn the ball over once in the first half.
200
Saturday's 71-62 win over Bowling Green gave UDM Head Coach
Ray McCallum his 200th of his collegiate coaching career. The Titans' head man is in his 14th season at the helm of a college program, including his third here in Detroit. It also marked his 10th win over BGSU all-time, tied for third-most against any school (Central Michigan- 13, Western Michigan- 12, Toledo- 10).
GET THAT OUTTA HERE
The Titans registered a season-high 13 blocks in the win over Niagara on Sunday. It was the most blocked shots since last year's team swatted away 17 shots against Shawnee State exactly 11 months earlier (12/28/09).
LaMarcus Lowe had six blocks to lead the way, one shy of his personal best. Five different Titans tallied at least one block in the win.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE PLAYER-PLAYER
Sunday's win featured another statistical oddity with two Titans each recording double-doubles.
Eli Holman scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds before sitting most of the second half and allowing
LaMarcus Lowe to gather 12 points and 10 rebounds in the second half alone.
LOWE DOWN
LaMarcus Lowe moved his season block total to 16 through eight games this season, leading the team in that category despite coming off the bench. He etched a season-high with his half-dozen total on Sunday. His 2.0 average is 66th in the country heading into this week. He has registered a block in all but one game this season (at Mississippi State- 11/22).
